How did we jump from the new year exhilarations, fire works to 29th January 2024?

Have you had time to set your goals? Over the years we have read a ton of articles on new year resolutions and how by the end of January, people don’t remember them. Those people will always live among us but they should not deter you from setting your goals.

I am the goal setting, to do list kinda girl. I derive joy from writing things down and working towards bringing them to pass. Last year I set out to achieve four goals because I have learned from previous years to set SMART goals that I can put my everything to. I successfully achieved two of them and this brought me immense joy. The two that were not achieved have been moved to the 2024 list!!

Again I have set four major goals: two are already in motion. I have contacted the various stakeholders that I need help from, put aside the resources that will enable me implement the tasks. What this sort of preparation does for me, is raise my expectation. My mind is so focused on the goals that I cannot imagine failing to achieve them.

Last year was my best year in terms of achieving my new year resolutions. I achieved two of them in the first quarter of the year!! On the backdrop of that success I share tips that will help you achieve some measure of success if you are keen to set goals:

Set a small number of goals that you can put your whole body, mind and soul to. I usually set four major goals and sometimes they have minor goals in them. Read my reflections here and here. I am committing to producing at least 12 podcast episodes this year. Listen to episode one here. Please remember to subscribe and share widely in your communities.

Find out what you need to achieve each goal. For example if you want to learn how to swim. Find a swimming spot through recommendations from friends or social media. (I got my recommendation from a friend). Plan accordingly especially financially. I put the following in my budget: instructor fee (per lesson), pool fee, swimming googles and cap, swimming costume, transport to venue. This kind of preparation guarantees a good start and whenever resources come your way, you will know where to channel them.

Plan ahead. Keep your mind in/on your goals. Think about them. Do not let a day or two go by without you thinking on them, working towards them. Read up on them. Talk to friends about them. Let them consume you.

Set timelines in order to ensure a good start. With my swimming classes, I have already set dates with the instructor. I am stoked for this particular goal because I have failed to execute it so many times.

Find accountability partners who will check in and help you keep on track. Share with them your goals and allow them to check in and be willing to share your progress always.

Reward yourself. This will keep you motivated. Achieve your goal which in itself is a reward but also give yourself a treat because everything is double, double, na double, double…..Listen to My God is Good by Uche and enjoy your double blessing.

Do not compare yourself to anyone. You’re too perfect to be equated to another human being. Pace yourself.
