A Bookish Valentine

A Bookish Valentine

Whenever February comes around, all our eyes are on Valentine’s day! The day when the world goes in over drive to celebrate love openly without financial restraint. I always read books that centre love and here are a few that I read between late last year into February:

Sweet Mercy By Frances Mensah Williams

Mercy is married to a hot politician, Lucas. She’s the ever-doting wife and mother who never upsets the status quo until her marriage is at stake.

Mercy is so many women who because of a difficult past, finds solace in marriage. A thing she can do well. She has no sense of self. Her identity is pinned to being a wife and mother but she picks up her life and turns things around. I loved the turnaround. No woman should forget herself for the sake of one identity or the other. Women should nurture all sides of them.

Lucas got what he deserved. Sweet Mercy is an enthralling read. Women have power. It’s a beautiful reminder to women to love themselves, maintain genuine friendships and never take marriage and motherhood to be the ultimate definers of who they are.

Valentine by Kiyu Tare

Michael and Kasie meet under regular circumstances but this encounter sparks an attraction that naturally takes on the form of love. Kasie has experienced a heartbreak and does not want another but Michael is the man who might heal her heart.

Michael has demons of his own to fight as in the past dating women like Kasie has only brought him sorrow.

This is a delicious rom-com set in Enugu. It’s a love at first sight sorta situation and I love it. Kasie and Michael are willing to risk it all for love. It is short and sweet. The plot advanced quickly.

The storyline is explored well though I wished that Kasie’s family issues were resolved. I was left hanging.

Worthy by Taye Kiru

Peter and Tessa meet on a night out. The night unlocks deep-seated desires that can only be quenched by them being together. Peter devises means for this but faces obstacles from Tessa’s past and present life.

The author weaves a sick, twisted and exhilarating story.  she pushes the boundaries to deliver a thrilling rom-com. I enjoyed reading it.

River Wild by Frances Mensah Williams

River is ambitious and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. She has been dating her long time boyfriend who she feels is not doing ‘enough’ to get money. He is not ambitious enough for her goals. She wants more out of life and that is when hot and rich Donald waltzs into her life. He is everything Cameron is not. The two get intertwined like water hyacinths in Lake Victoria.

River has a captivating premise and gives Accra glamour. River’s character is well developed. I could relate to her through the different phases of her life.

The romance between River and Cameron was sweet. I wished we had more steamy moments.

Dating Mr Famous by Gloria Abah

I love a good love story that gets my toes curling and my face twisted in a happy swoony smile. Dating Mr. Famous is exactly that and it is set in Nigeria.

Meghan sets out to get over her heartbreak by getting under another man!! That is always disastrous. The tide changes in her favour when Mr. Famous wants a taste of her.

Meghan wakes up to images of her kissing a famous actor whose girlfriend is a walking Beyonce!! It was beautiful reading how she navigates being an instant sensation, having conservative parents and her desire and attraction to Mr. Famous.

I loved this sweet and short read.  Some scenes and sentences were cringeworthy but on the whole I enjoyed the story. It gave me Nollywood vibes.

Heat of Love by Meka James

A sweet and quirky romance about a widow who falls in love with a handsome firefighter. He fights for her heart and burns down all the walls.

It was refreshing to read a story centred around a widow with a child and her new life with a new man and how everyone responded to that.

I wish that the Trent chase was more centred. Like he tried coming at her or something so we see the tension.

What a Match by Mimi Grace

Falling in love with your brother’s best friend is not a bad idea. Gwen Gilmore is searching for a compatible partner with 96 per cent compatibility!!

She’s committed to multiple dating while she scores her dates like the school teacher that she is until she meets a match she can’t win. One that sets her heart and body ablaze with Tony-longing. (pun intended)

Mimi Grace has written a sweet, light read that will have you cheering Tony on. Go, Tony. Get that!!

Just what I needed to get out of a reading slump.

The Unmatchable Bachelor by Kelly Papyrus

A divorced Indian woman becomes a matchmaker and thrives in her new profession until she gets a new client with special needs. The trying to solve the needs is underwhelming.

A very interesting plot that promised a great story but fell flat for me. It didn’t deliver. I wished for more when we reached the anticlimax but got nothing.

Fear note, the matchmaker finds love and its beautiful. I love the sizzling attraction between her and her partner. Read it for that bit.

Hey, Lover by DL White

Ever thought about a second chance at love? I’ve honestly never thought about it because I believe in the adage ,’ let bygones be bygones’ but Malik and India who have been apart for seven years reconnect and it’s like they never left.

Malik Hines is a tech geek growing his company up from scratch silently stalking ex-lover India Parker, the new CEO replacing her daddy.

The two always greet each other with a ‘Hey, Lover’ that sends 1001 meanings digging from the past and now present life. They navigate jealousy, patriarchy and low self-esteem to keep a hold on their newfound love.

Hey, Lover is a sweet, cheesy romcom that got me in my feelings. It thrilled me out of a reading slump.

It’s heavy on the tech/gamers lingo that a few pages in I wanted Malik to stop talking about the game. hahaha!!! It lightens up later. I enjoyed the plot being around gamers, I had never seen anything like that before.

India was business savvy and smart and rooted for herself first before Malik. This balance for a female character was refreshing to see, not everyday pinning over a man.

Rival Bid by Reese Ryan

A grown folk sexy kind of romcom is what Reese Ryan served in Rival Bid.

Cammie and Kai fall so deep in love that not even their family rivalry from the past can quench their fire.

Love conquers all right? The two navigate the complexities from the past, forge a future together and win over both families and rewrite history.

It had a slow start but picked up eventually. The characters were solid and well built, they moved the plot along.

Mr Tall,Dark & Unavailable by Tina Martin

What is the point of getting married to the most eligible bachelor only for him to ignore you? What’s the point of your husband loving the entire world and drawing the line when it comes to you?

Mr.Caspian is black excellence. He’s every woman’s wet and dry dream but he misses out on the one thing every woman longs for-attention and communication. This has his wife Nia exasperated. But as all romcoms go, they work things out and live happily ever after.

I liked that they showed the lack of balance for Caspian-he had too much on his plate but kept on taking on more thanks to his ego and his father’s influence. Men have so many burdens that weigh them down but this should never be an excuse for bad behaviour. Nia calls him out on this and I am glad that we see change.

The Kwanzaa Brunch: The Holiday Novella by DL White

Sometimes changing location is the best way to heal from a heart break. Booker takes on a new job, leaving behind his past littered with pain, ex scamming lover, less pay to start over in a new place, meets new people, gets paid better and it a clean start. He finds love in the most unlikely places and celebrates a fresh start.

Grown folk romance is everything I currently want. As we get older, we are faced with complexities that romcoms should show more of. DL White gave me a lot of that which I truly appreciated.
