February Book Tales

February Book Tales

Book lovers, do you read romantic books in the month of love aka February? I never do. However, I have noticed that my reads in February were love-themed in one way or another. Pure coincidence. I never planned it. I wholeheartedly enjoyed reading each of these novels.

My February mini reviews:

The Color Purple by Alice Walker (1982)

The Color Purple is an epistolary novel based on the life of Celie and Nettie-two sisters whose lives take on different journeys. It is set in the deep American South where racial barriers are as visible as black and white.

Celie is married off to Mr_ who mistreats her, beats her, rapes her and she takes it because a woman belongs to her husband and must obey him. She is tasked with raising Mr_`s stubborn children and also tend to him and his Lover-Shug Avery. Shug is a singer who every man and woman desires to catch a glimpse of. The men want to sleep with her and the women want to be like her. She is a woman in control of her life and decisions with no man controlling her. Through her, Celie grows self-aware and confident enough to forge her own path in life away from her husband and her past life. Celie lets herself love Shug and it is clear that she never loved Mr_.

On the other side of the continent, her sister Nettie is a missionary teaching kids how to read and write, building schools and so much more. She writes letters to Celie detailing all her adventures and life while revealing ground breaking secrets. Secrets that change the way Celie views herself and life.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones (2018)

Roy and Celestial are a year and a half into marriage when Roy is accused by a woman he met briefly while getting ice of rape. He is accused and charged with no concrete evidence of a crime only Celestial knows he didn`t commit. He is sentenced to 12 years in prison. While in prison, Roy and Celestial exchange letters and visits. Roy`s being in prison is a complexity that their young love can`t withstand. Celestial finds comfort in her childhood friend, Andre who embraces her complexities.

Roy`s sentence is unexpectedly overturned and he comes back home to his wife but he is a changed man and she is a changed woman. Will they resume their life as husband and wife?

#2 The Viscount Who Loved Me (2000)

Anthony Bridgerton the eldest of the Bridgerton siblings, and the hottest bachelor on the season doesn`t want to be tied down by the whims of marriage until he meets Kate Sheffield. He has no intentions of marrying her because she is plain and not as elegant and graceful as her sister, whom Anthony fancies to settle down with. But Kate`s biting humour and sarcasm draw him in and he finds himself bowing down to the whims of marriage.

#3 An Offer from a Gentleman (2001)

Sophia Beckett steals into the Bridgerton Masquerade ball and catches the eye of Benedict Bridgerton. Sophia is an earl`s daughter but her devious stepmother treats her like a slave. Like a Cinderella of the night, she must be home by midnight.

Benedict Bridgerton is enchanted by the mysterious lady he met at the Masquerade ball. He harbours vivid images of her and has vowed not to settle for any woman but her. Until he meets a housemaid whom he saves from what is about to be a `gang rape’ whose very existence and charisma reminds him of the mysterious lady. Will he forget the mysterious lady and move on with the housemaid?

I believe this book was questioning society`s classes, rich can`t marry poor, yet as we all know, love knows no class. Attraction can be between two people of different classes as per Benedict`s experience.

#4 Romancing Mister Bridgerton (2002)

In Romancing Mister Bridgerton, Julia Quinn weaves such a compelling and enchanting tale of love. Penelope Featherington is a spinster at 28, she missed out on being chosen as somebody’s wife in two seasons. She has had deep feelings for Colin Bridgerton since she was a young girl, but Colin considers her a `sister’. He announces to his brothers that he will never marry Penelope, who happens to be in hearing.

Colin Bridgerton aka no 3 suddenly sees Penelope for who she is-a beautiful, intelligent, sassy and witty woman. Before, he saw her as the girl who is best friends with his sister. But his heart seems to know what his mind doesn`t know yet. However, Penelope`s secret has the power to taint their beautiful union. What will he do to protect his wife whom he has sworn to protect? Is his protection strong enough from the ton`s wrath?

This has got to be my favourite book in the Bridgerton series. While reading this book, I realised that if I was living in the 1800`s I would qualify as a spinster. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Penelope was just 28 years old and she carried the spinster label like one of those yellow garments her mother always forced her to wear.

Which book would you read from my February reads?

  1. Hey, Spinster! πŸ˜…πŸ€©

Now, I think I really have to binge the Bridgerton series (books & films)

    1. Hey hey there, are you a fellow spinster?πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Gal, get onto the books, they are so good and easy to read. The series, well I am not keen on watching it after the books. Books are always better in my opinion.

      1. We’re in this spinsterhood together, baby! πŸ˜‚

I hear books are always better but then, film is my industry 😁

        1. hehehehehe, spinsterhood is fun ooo. Books are my thing. Enjoy the series then, it is fun. The screen play writers did a fantastic job and well Shonda did what Shonda does best-give us something to talk about.
